Computer Internet Tips and Tricks: 10 Free Programs You Should ...

For this article, I decided to create a list of 10 free programs you can download to keep your computer secure. This list of programs will help you protect your computer from Viruses, Spyware, and hackers. All of the programs listed here are highly recommended, and like I said, all have a free version available.

I should note though that many websites that carry articles do not allow more then a couple links in the main body of the article. Because of this, I am unable to include download links for each program. However, if you do a search for them on Google, you can find where to download them. Alternatively, you can visit my website where I have uploaded this article and included links inside the article to download each program. The web address is listed in my author info.

Anyway, let's get to the list of 10 programs you should download to protect yourself from Spyware and Computer Viruses and keep your computer safe.

Ad-Aware

Ad-Aware is one of the oldest Anti-Spyware programs available and also one of the best. Ad-Aware has been around for over ten years now. Over the ten years, Ad-Aware has been a top notch program and it doesn't look to be changing anytime soon. If you do not have Ad-Aware protecting your system, then I highly recommend you download it right now.

AVG Anti-virus

With McAfee and Norton on the market, many people are under the impression that you will have to pay money for virus protection. This is wrong! There are free anti-virus solutions available and AVG is one of the best. AVG has all of the usual features and it's highly recommended that you download AVG Anti-Virus if you don't already have a virus scanner.

Hijack This!

Hijack This! can be a great program for helping you get rid of some tricky Spyware. Beware though, you really need to know what you are doing when you are using Hijack This!. Hijack This! isn't for beginners. However, it's worth downloading and keeping around so if you ever do have a tricky spyware problem, an expert online can help you use Hijack This! to get rid of it. Because honestly, most experts online are going to ask you to download Hijack This!.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is newer then some of the other anti-Spyware products, but don't let that discourage you. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a great tool for protecting yourself against spyware. Like Ad-Aware, it can do a complete scan of your computer and most spyware problems you are having you can say goodbye to thanks to this program.

Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot Search & Destroy reminds me of Ad-Aware, it has been around a long time and has stood the test of time. Spybot Search & Destroy may not be as pretty as some of the other anti-spyware programs, but that's okay because Spybot Search & Destroy means business. Spybot Search & Destroy should have all of the tools you need to protect you from Spyware even if you don't download any other program listed here.

SpywareBlaster

What can I say about SpywareBlaster? SpywareBlaster is a really cool program. SpywareBlaster isn't a scanner, instead, it's purpose is to prevent Spyware from getting onto your system in the first place. SpywareBlaster has a database of thousands of harmful Active X Plug-ins that it blocks. Just download SpywareBlaster, install it, click to enable the protection, and that's it. SpywareBlaster doesn't even need to be running all the time. A very useful program that should be included in your list of programs you use to protect your computer.

SpywareGuard

SpywareGuard is simlar to SpywareBlaster, it tries to prevent Spyware from getting onto your system. However, SpywareGuard works in a different way. SpywareGuard works by monitoring your computer for typical Spyware-like behavior. If SpywareGuard spots anything, it will alert you. The downside to this is that you need to keep SpywareGuard open for it to work. On the plus side though, it means SpywareGuard doesn't need to be constantly updated, since it doesn't rely on definition files.

Startup Inspector

Startup Inspector is a program used for monitoring and disabling items that run when you turn on the computer. So how does that relate to this list? Well Startup Inspector can really be handy in fighting Spyware because a lot of Spyware programs will be set to run when you turn on the computer. Before you turn off the computer each night, take a quick look at Startup Inspector and see what is set to run when you turn on the computer next time. See anything suspicious? If so, go ahead and run a scan with another program listed here. But remember, you first noticed something suspicious thanks to Startup Inspector. This is why I included it in this list. :)

Update Windows

Okay, guess what? I lied. This isn't even a software program. Regardless though, this has to be included in this list. One of the biggest ways your computer can be attacked is through security holes that were left open from not updating your operating system. Do your computer a favor and go online to WindowsUpdate and update your computer right away.

ZoneAlarm

Finally, we come to ZoneAlarm. ZoneAlarm is a firewall and will monitor all ingoing and outgoing connections on your computer. This is very useful for keeping your computer safe, because Zonealarm will block unauthorized connections to your computer. Basically, ZoneAlarm stops hackers. Great software!

In all honesty, if you don't want to try all of these programs, even just download one or two. Having one or two of these can still make a big difference with your computer. It can be scary with so much Spyware and Viruses on the internet. But now, you have the information you need to stay protected. Good luck
TECHNOLOGY NEWS NET: SYMANTEC AND 11 OTHER FAILS VIRUS ...
Virus Bulletin (VB) conducted its latest test in July, posting the results this month. The security research company evaluated 35 anti-malware products for the 32-bit version of Windows Vista SP2 Business. The basic requirements for a product passing the test is detecting, both on demand and on access, in its default settings, all malware known to be "In the Wild" at the time of the review, and not detecting any false positives when scanning a set of clean files. The products were pitted against about 3,000 unique samples of malware that fall into four categories: WildList viruses, Worms and bots, Polymorphic viruses, and Trojans.

A third of the products did not manage to meet these requirements: 23 products passed the test, leaving 12 products to fail. Here are the ones that failed, as well as the reason for not passing:
FAILED ANTIVIRUS LIST:
1. Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro (one false positive),
2. CA Internet Security Suite (960 polymorphic viruses misses),
3. Filseclab Twister AntiTrojanVirus (2612 wildlist misses, 38 false positives),
4. Finport Simple Anti-Virus (2897 wildlist misses, two false positives),
5. K7 Total Security Desktop (one false positive),
6. Kingsoft Internet Security 2009 Standard (228 wildlist misses),
7. PC Tools AntiVirus 2009 (1188 wildlist misses, one false positive),
8. PC Tools Internet Security 2009 (1355 wildlist misses, one false positive),
9. PC Tools Spyware Doctor (1355 wildlist misses, one false positive),
10. Rising Internet Security 2009 (43 wildlist misses, one false positive),
11. Symantec Endpoint Protection (two wildlist misses), and
12. VirusBuster Professional (one false positive).
An interesting thing to note in this test is Kingsoft's results: the Standard version failed the test while the Advanced version of the company's product passed. PC Tools, on the other hand, saw all three of its products bomb. Symantec's failure is particularly unacceptable as the security giant is often talked up as the top dog in the market. Microsoft's success with its Forefront product is promising not only for business users, but for consumers as well, given that the upcoming Microsoft Security Essentials product is closely tied to it.

The next VB test results will be posted two months from now and will be for Windows Server 2008, though actual testing will be conducted in September.

Update:

"In the past ten years, Symantec has earned 44 consecutive VB100 awards, something no other vendor has come close to matching," a Symantec spokesperson told Ars. "In the August edition of Virus Bulletin, Symantec did not receive the VB100 award certification due to missing an extremely rare replicant of a highly polymorphic file infecting virus in the VB lab test. We have received no reports related to this issue from any customers. This has been fixed in our signatures for all customers."

The good thing about Trojan Horses: It's not that difficult to remove them. But the bad thing is that Trojan Viruses are quite difficult to find.

Although they will not corrupt files or delete things on your hard disk, using them allows hackers to detect your credit card number, your social security number or some other private data. And of course, this is 1000 times worse.

The problem about deleting Trojan Horses is that since they have a variety of forms, there is no single method to delete them. Normally, using some antivirus software will help detecting and removing the Trojan Horses hiding on your hard disk. You can also try to clear the temporary internet files and delete them manually. Otherwise try this:

1) Open the System Information Utility (msinfo32.exe). You will find it at:
C:program filescommonmicrosoft sharedmsinfo. This program shows you all the processes running on any windows system, even those that are hidden from the task list that you normally use to look up the running processes on your PC. Now look for task listings which you do not recognize. Check the filenames and paths. Open your virus scanner and run the executable or .dll through it.

2) Open your antivirus software (If you don't have one, download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5. It's pretty good and free). Run a virus scan. After the scan delete the value that was detected from the registry (first back up the registry!):

A) Click "Start > Run"
B) Type "regedit"
C) Click "OK"
D) Go to the subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServices

E) Now delete any value in the right pane that was detected during the scan
F) Exit the Registry Editor

3) If the steps 1) and 2) didn't help, download the free program HijackThis. It shows all the processes running on your system. Once listed, you can manually select and delete the fishy processes.
10 Fast and Free Security Enhancements | Aku Dan...... .
Before you spend a dime on security, there are many precautions you can take that will protect you against the most common threats.
1. Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly (_http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates); have your Office CD ready. Windows Me, 2000, and XP users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.
2. Install a personal firewall. Both SyGate (_www.sygate.com) and ZoneAlarm (_www.zonelabs.com) offer free versions.
3. Install a free spyware blocker. Our Editors' Choice ("Spyware," April 22) was SpyBot Search & Destroy (_http://security.kolla.de). SpyBot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.
4. Block pop-up spam messages in Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program). Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.
5. Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Passwords should have at least seven characters; use letters and numbers and have at least one symbol. A decent example would be f8izKro@l. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.
6. If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version or one with the Outlook Security Update installed. The update and current versions patch numerous vulnerabilities.
7. Buy antivirus software and keep it up to date. If you're not willing to pay, try Grisoft AVG Free Edition (Grisoft Inc., www.grisoft.com). And doublecheck your AV with the free, online-only scanners available at w*w.pandasoftware.com/activescan and _http://housecall.trendmicro.com.
8. If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features: Use MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the biggest key you can get. For more, check out our wireless section or see the expanded coverage in Your Unwired World in our next issue.
9. Join a respectable e-mail security list, such as the one found at our own Security Supersite at _http://security.ziffdavis.com, so that you learn about emerging threats quickly and can take proper precautions.
10. Be skeptical of things on the Internet. Don't assume that e-mail "From:" a particular person is actually from that person until you have further reason to believe it's that person. Don't assume that an attachment is what it says it is. Don't give out your password to anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support."

Techno-crafts: Going Anti - Antivirus !!

The Question always kept wondering me !! can I run my system without using antivirus and not jeopardize my security , and in search of answer I went over a lot of articles and finally found the answer to be yes. The reason y not using Antivirus is simple , when we fall sick we are given some disgusting medicines which hardly goes down our throat same is the case with the PC , difference is only that even if the PC is not sick the medicine has to be taken or rather given. Antivirus programs hog on to our system resource making them slow, there are lot of people who hate this including me !! also the pain of cracking the antivirus every day updating them, renewing their signatures yearly some times by paying just adds to the Crap !!! so how do we go about “Anti – Antivirus” ?? the answer is quite simple .

Using the very uncommon thing called Common sense and following some of these mentioned tips.

Remember to use legitimate and clean software for your pc, think twice before downloading any software over internet. Remember that being without an antivirus program often means living without on-demand scanning, so a file you download online isn't as easy to check for viruses as it would be if you had an antivirus program installed. Still, plenty of people can and do assemble systems solely with commercial, off-the-shelf applications, and you can, too.

If you have a network of PC, you can very well share the drives of a Non Antivirus PC with a Pc running Antivirus and run a remote scan. Also there are lots of sites which provide an online scan of your PC like “Trend Micro’s House Call” or ESET’s site. But ya, the limitation are that these online scanning tools won’t clean the virus but they will definitely tell you the status of your PC.

Another way is when your windows boots up, it launches the code found in your system's BIOS (basic input-output system), which initiates the hardware in your PC and enables your operating system to identify the components you have. Within the BIOS of most PCs -- accessible by pressing F2 or Del during bootup -- is an optional boot sector protection mechanism. Enable this, and you'll protect against boot sector viruses without ever installing a single antivirus tool.

Moreover the browsers of modern era are well loaded with threat alerts system, analyzing the unsecured Scripts, anti phishing tools, and provide the list of websites which carry virus and malware programs. Using these features won’t slow down your system.

Free tools like windows bit defender which comes with Vista and free for download for windows XP can be used against spywares and malwares. Common sense will go a long way toward keeping your computer safe if you don't use antivirus software. Stay away from sites that are frequent carriers of spyware. These include, ironically, many sites that purportedly sell anti-spyware software.

One of the main sources of trouble is the Email messages from unknown users. The large majority of viruses are contracted from unsolicited e-mail, so use an e-mail application with a built-in spam checker, if at all possible.

Another Common way for entrances of virus is the usb. Now without any real-time scanner it becomes difficult to deal with USB drives. This USB drive generally contains a file names Autorun.inf which initiates the virus on the drive. And it will be triggered as soon as u plug the drive. So the solution is to disable the autorun option on windows by registry options.

Modifying the Registry is not for the inexperienced user, be VERY careful.

The modifications made in this case use Hex not Decimal numbers. If you are unfamiliar with the Registry or the characteristics of base numbering and Hex, studying these topics prior to making these modifications is advisable.

To modify these Registry Settings, Use Regedit and navigate to the following Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Policies -> Explorer -> "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"

The default value for the setting is 95 0 0 0. Change the first byte to 91. Restart the computer to make the new setting take effect.

So Guys these ways and of course Common sense will help u to get rid of ANTIVIRUS…. !!
